Brain Performance
Cordell E. Logan, ND
Everyone wants a better brain. We want a better memory, better focus, and want to prevent problems that may come on as we become older. One study showed that 86 percent of all who come to a doctor’s office are low in brain neurotransmitters.
The brain communicates by using certain normal body chemicals, such as dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, GABA, and others. Often these relate to amino acids.
Neurotransmitter depletion can be caused by stress, poor diet (including fatty acids, protein, etc.), toxins, electronic pollution, drug use, alcohol and caffeine usage, lack of sleep, and genetic predisposition.
The following conditions may mean neurotransmitter deficiencies: ADD, autism, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, migraine headaches, eating disorders, focus and memory, immune system disorders, lethargy, and mood disorders.
In many cases, these neurotransmitters can be replaced by using natural nutrients. First we should determine which neurotransmitters are low. Some questionnaires are available to help with this. More recently the Neurogistics group in Texas have a program whereby a urine sample is taken for analysis. This is probably the best way now. We at Nova Health are now a certified clinic to offer this for our patients. See the back side to find out more.
Brain Dominance Survey
This is way to determine the dominances of the “four brains” as defined by Ted Herrmann and his research in the late 1980s. He found that people are not just “left brained” or “right brained” but that there are four areas. The lower brain, or limbic part, constitutes the thinking patterns that are different from the top cerebral part. A person may be single-dominant, double-dominant, triple-dominant, or quadruple-dominant, and with various combinations thereof.
Their web site in on the next page.
Here is an example of attributes with the four brains:
Whole Brain Model (one example)
| (A) Upper Left | (D)Upper Right |
|---|---|
Logical Analytical Quantitative Fact-based
|
Holistic Intuitive Synthesizing Integrataive |
(B) Lower Left |
(C) Lower Right |
Planned Organizing Detailed Sequential
|
Emotional Interpersonal Feeling-based Kinesthetic |
For the Brain Dominance Survey, you may take a short questionnaire to give some idea of where your are (at our clinic). However, a more accurate way is to take the test given from their web site: www.hopellc.com
Amen Clinics do the SPECT studies but also offer a free online questionnaire. See www.amenclinic.com. This is a good screening survey that relates to neurotransmitters and behavior.
Also the Braverman survey can be meaningful. In Chapter 3 of Dr. Braverman's book is the test (which consists of two parts). After taking this test, you can score yourself. Book: Braverman, Eric. The Edge Effect. 2005. ISBN 1-4027-2247-8 (paperback at stores such as at Barnes & Noble).
Neurogistics has a urine test. This is a kit that they will mail to you with directions on how to do it. Then you mail this back to the lab all prepaid with your fee. They will mail back your results with recommended neurotransmitter support. Web site: www.neurogistics.com. Once in here, press the “Get Started” button and take the short free self-test. At the end of this, put in L2043, which is the code for Dr. Logan (or whomever is working with you).
